Enabling CTL: A Potential Fuel Solution?

With high levels of participation from countries around the globe, Day One of the Enabling Coal to Liquids Markets Summit covers the economic, regulatory and commercial issues affecting the market framework for CTL implementation. Day Two of the Summit will deliver specific solutions to technical challenges including cost-breakdowns and carbon footprint measurement of the individual technologies.

Special sessions will also be allocated to underground coal gasification (UCG), biomass co-feeding, underground carbon sequestration and enhanced oil recovery.

Global Enabling Coal to Liquids Market Summit

With current high oil prices, Coal to Liquids (CTL) is one of a number of possible solutions to the current energy crisis. National governments and end users are giving serious consideration to the future implementation of CTL, while major players in the coal mining and refining industries are driving forward the rapid development of new technologies to bring CTL projects into the new ‘energy mix’.

Recognising that rapidly increasing global fuel demand could be substantially met with CTL-based products, and with tests proving that CTL-based fuels can equal the performance of hydrocarbons, a brand new CTL industry is now emerging. The US Air Force’s demand for CTL based aviation fuel is viewed as a landmark in this industry’s development in North America, but what exactly are the other potential market opportunities for developers to launch CTL products as new fuel options, in both North America, Europe, Asia and the rest of the globe?

The Enabling Global Coal to Liquids Markets Summit, taking place in Houston, Texas this October 2008 is a unique opportunity to establish the very latest thinking and market information from ‘early adopters’ in the burgeoning CTL industry. Those countries who are already someway down the road with CTL such as China and South Africa will share their knowledge and experiences with other potential developers and end-users from around the world where significant coal resources could be utilized in this way.

The North American case for CTL will be afforded special attention as the Summit program deals with the specific investment required and government support mechanisms that need to be put into place for the successful development of CTL plants across the USA.

What Are The Key Market And Technological Developments That Need To Happen In Order For CTL Markets To Be Fully Enabled Commercially?

Major challenges lie ahead if markets for Coal To Liquids are to be fully realized. There are still serious concerns about environmental emissions: however, the introduction of biomass into the process alongside carbon capture and storage (CSS), enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and enhanced gas recovery (EGR) offer new solutions to reduce the impact of this. At the same time, regulatory uncertainty, high capital and operational costs have hindered the growth of the industry, with developers struggling to find the necessary economic supports.

Providing A Roadmap To CTL Fuel Commercialization

To drive the CTL industry forward to its maximum potential in North America, as well as around the world, the industry’s first movers need regulatory certainty and guarantees from end users as well as incentives and support from federal and national governments. The Enabling Global Coal To Liquids Markets Summit, organized by American Business Conferences, will play a timely and important role in facilitating discussions between the coal and refining industries, government departments, CTL plant developers, end users, research bodies and technology providers. By bringing in global organizations with technical knowledge and experience in CTL and carbon sequestration, the Houston Summit will be significant in expediting the maturation of this industry and the formation of new CTL technology partnerships.

A truly global event, with a dual focus on the economic and environmental challenges, the Summit agenda will discuss the delivery of solutions to the technical impediments that could prevent the rise of CTL-based fuels as a viable fuel source, and will enable the world’s leading coal conversion leaders to thrash out any uncertainties around the size of the market, meet potential CTL customers and gain clarity on the support that these new fuels will receive from legislators and governments.
